Future of Work Roundup - Week of October 24

Welcome to the Future of Work Roundup. Each week, we bring you five top stories—drawing from the latest academic research and industry trends—to give you an easily-digestible snapshot of how work is changing—and why it matters.

Job cuts at Twitter

The Washington Post reported that big workforce cuts are on the horizon at Twitter. While these cuts seem inevitable regardless, we can expect them to be especially deep if Elon Musk ends up taking control. Musk has said that he intends to cull about 75% of Twitter’s 7,500 workers if he takes control.

Detoxing from a bad job

A new Harvard Business Review article outlines the importance of taking time to detox after a bad job. How can you do this? Executive coach Melody Wilding (and author of the article) says to consider writing a goodbye letter that you don't send to your former employer to let off some steam and resentment.

Struggling execs

New research from Slack’s Future Forum found that managers are struggling with burnout and lower levels of job satisfaction. As they struggle to lead in the “new normal,” executives’ overall satisfaction at work has fallen 15% over the past year.

Hybrid work’s impact on airlines

The bleisure (business + leisure) trend continues to gain steam. In a recent quarterly earnings call, United Airlines CEO, Scott Kirby, explained that he expects that hybrid working will drive increased airline traffic, saying “There’s been a permanent structural change in leisure demand because of the flexibility that hybrid work allows.”

Track pants at work

The Wall Street Journal reported on the rise of track pants at work. Track pants—also a manifestation of the bleisure trend—are being sported by women in the office and even black-tie events as a more comfortable alternative to traditional workplace apparel.
